FAQ

At Influence Integrative Health, we support patients across Alberta through virtual care focused on hormone health and functional medicine. Whether you’re navigating perimenopause, thyroid issues, fatigue, or just not feeling like yourself—we’re here to help. Even if you’ve had conditions like breast cancer or are on birth control, you may still benefit from our functional approach. We work to uncover the root cause of your symptoms and guide you toward lasting wellness with personalized care.

1. What is bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT)?

BHRT involves using hormones that are chemically identical to those the human body naturally produces, such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, to treat hormonal imbalances or deficiencies.

2. How is BHRT different from traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Traditional HRT often uses synthetic hormones or those derived from animal sources, whereas BHRT uses hormones that are structurally identical to those found in the human body. BHRT is often customized for each patient.

3. Who can benefit from BHRT?

People experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance—such as perimenopausal or menopausal women, andropausal men, or individuals with thyroid dysfunction—may benefit from BHRT.

4. What symptoms can BHRT help relieve?

Common symptoms BHRT may alleviate include hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, mood swings, low libido, weight gain, brain fog, and sleep disturbances.

5. Is BHRT safe?

BHRT can be safe when administered and monitored by a qualified healthcare provider. However, like any therapy, it can carry risks.. Personalized evaluation and regular monitoring are essential and your provider will work with you to determine the safest approach to your care.

6. How is BHRT administered?

BHRT can be delivered through various forms including creams, gels, patches, pills, injections, and pellets. The delivery method depends on individual needs and preferences.

7. How long does it take to feel results from BHRT?

Some people start noticing improvements within a few weeks, but optimal results typically take 2 to 3 months as hormone levels stabilize and the body adjusts.

8. Are there side effects of BHRT?

Possible side effects include bloating, acne, headaches, breast tenderness, or mood changes. These are often dose-dependent and may resolve with adjustments to the treatment plan.

9. How are hormone levels tested for BHRT?

Hormone levels are usually measured through blood tests, but saliva or urine testing may also be used depending on the provider’s approach and the hormones being measured.

10. Are my appointments and prescriptions covered by insurance?

You may be able to submit appointment receipts to your health spending account. Please call your insurance provider prior to your appointment as coverage varies. Initial lab testing requisitions are covered by Alberta Health. If you have prescription benefits, most prescriptions will fall under your coverage.
